Between Monday, 17 August and Friday, 21 August 2026, gold experienced a particularly strong week. The international gold price rose by approximately 5% and reached its highest level in more than three months on Friday. Expressed in euros, the spot price of pure gold moved from approximately €121 to more than €127 per gram during the week.

 

This increase was mainly driven by a weaker US dollar and growing concerns about US government debt and public finances. At the same time, expectations of further interest rate increases declined.

 

Gold does not generate interest. When interest rate expectations fall, the precious metal generally becomes more attractive. During periods of financial and monetary uncertainty, investors also tend to seek the protection offered by tangible assets such as physical gold.

 

This strong price movement once again demonstrates why gold has been used for centuries to preserve and diversify wealth. However, the gold price can fluctuate daily. There is also a difference between the international spot price and the actual buying or selling price of physical gold bars and coins.
