On Purchasing Power, Gold and the Things That Stand the Test of Time

19-06-2026

By Egzon Jusufi

I am Egzon Jusufi, the third generation at Edelmetaal Richard.

Some people refer to me as the CEO, but in the end, that is just a title. What truly matters are the clients we have been assisting for many years with the purchase and sale of gold, watches and jewellery.

Today, I continue that tradition. Without major changes. Without our clients feeling that anything has changed. I have been part of the company for many years and today I am more visible at the forefront, but the values on which Edelmetaal Richard was built remain exactly the same.

The month of June has been particularly eventful.

Our company has not been spared from unexpected events. We experienced an attempted burglary, but thanks to the security measures in place, the situation ultimately had a positive outcome.

In addition, we unexpectedly lost two family members last week. Moments like these remind us that there are things more important than numbers, markets and economic analysis.

At the same time, a great deal is happening internationally. Geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty and rapid technological developments are making 2026 a year that many people will likely remember for a long time.

What particularly caught my attention this week was the valuation of SpaceX by Elon Musk.

What began with the capital Elon Musk received following the sale of PayPal and eBay has grown into a company valued at approximately 2.5 trillion dollars today.

Sometimes my calculator struggles to display numbers of that magnitude.

Perhaps it is simply not used to figures like these. But perhaps it tells us something else as well. Perhaps it says something about the world we live in today.

When numbers continue to grow larger and larger, it is worth asking a simple question: how much purchasing power does that money actually represent?

And that brings us back to gold.

For generations, physical gold has been regarded as a way to preserve wealth and purchasing power over the long term. Not because it rises spectacularly every year, but because throughout history it has often been used as a safeguard against the erosion of purchasing power.

For me, that is an important distinction.

Many companies have been launched like rockets. Some disappeared just as quickly as they arrived. Others became global leaders. Gold, however, has survived generations, wars, financial crises, monetary reforms and economic systems.

It may well be one of the few assets in the world that still serves the same purpose today as it did centuries ago.

On Friday, spot prices for gold and silver moved slightly lower. This was mainly due to reduced activity on the U.S. markets. At the same time, investors continue to monitor potential changes in Federal Reserve monetary policy.

Financial markets are also paying close attention to developments in the Strait of Hormuz. While shipping traffic is gradually resuming, the region remains a significant geopolitical risk factor for energy and commodity markets.

As a result, gold is increasingly being viewed as a risk management asset rather than a speculative instrument.

This aligns with the view of Axel Merk, who recently stated:

"I own gold for several reasons. It is about preserving purchasing power."

In other words, gold is not held solely in pursuit of returns, but also to help preserve purchasing power over the long term.

That is also how we see it.

Not as a trend.

Not as a temporary fashion.

But as a form of financial common sense.

Many market observers believe the long-term outlook for gold remains favourable. The fundamental reasons for owning gold have not disappeared.

Quite the opposite.

In a world where valuations continue to rise, debt levels keep increasing and geopolitical risks are becoming more significant, demand for tangible assets remains strong.

And that is precisely where we have been guiding our clients for generations.

Not through emotion.

Not through panic.

But through experience, expertise and a long-term vision of wealth preservation and purchasing power.
